The 42nd street el was opened by the New York Elevated Railway August 26, 1878 after taking control of the Ninth Ave el. This steam powered el was a shuttle going from the Third Ave el at 42nd street to Park Ave / 42nd street. It brought passengers to and from Grand Central Station. The el was in no way connected to Grand Central, but it brought passengers to the front door of 42nd and Park Ave when they walked down the stairs. It was electrified with third rails on April 1, 1903 along with the other Manhattan els. Service ended on 12/6/1923. Thirty two years later, the entire Third Ave el in Manhattan was abandoned 5/12/1955. The Bronx portion of the el lasted a lot longer, known as the IRT train from 1967 until 4/29/1973.
