The original IRT route first began on 10/27/1904. It first went from 145th st to Times Square, turned east on the 42nd street shuttle until it reached City Hall on today's Lexington Ave subway. There were only 28 stations in 1904. It extended beyond 145th to Bronx Park from 1905 to 1908. The Dual Contracts was implemented by the city to build additional lines along the BMT and IRT in 1913. From this, the Seventh Ave subway extended south of 42nd st and the Lexington Ave line extended north. The left over parts became today's 42nd street shuttle.

The Jerome - Lexington express went from City Hall to 42nd street on 10/27/1904. Later, the line was extended into Brooklyn, south of City Hall between 1905 - 1920. North of 42nd street, the line was extended to 149th street - Grand Concourse by 7/17/1918. The line becomes elevated in the Bronx and finally extended along Jerome Ave between 6/2/1917 - 4/15/1918.

On 7/1/1918, the Sixth and Ninth Ave els connected with the Jerome Ave el at Sedgwick Ave. The el service continued to Woodlawn on 1/2/1919 until 6/1/1940. When the Sixth and Ninth Ave els were abandoned, a small section from 155th street to 167th continued to exist as the Polo Grounds shuttle until 1958.

By 1956, the Jerome - Lexington express was known as the train. It followed the general pattern of Woodlawn to Utica Ave, for the most part throughout the years, but sometimes went to Flatbush Ave from 1967 - 1978.
