The Dyre Ave line, originally part of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway first began on May 29, 1912. It was built as a high speed electric railroad going from E 133rd street in the South Bronx to Portchester, Westchester. Unfortunately, the railroad fell into bankruptcy and ended on 12/31/1937.

The good news is that the New York City subway system purchased the tracks from E 180th street to Dyre Ave. It opened as a shuttle service on 5/15/1941 but for a long while wasn't connected with the rest of the system. The stations themselves have a suburban appeal not seen anywhere else in the subway system. It has a style all its own.

In 1956, the Dyre Ave line was known as the train. In 1966, it was known as the SS train. Finally in 1973, the Dyre Ave line merged with the train at E 180th street and became known as the Dyre Ave - Lexington express as it still is today.
