The train was created in 1989 as a skip stop service with the train. It ran only weekdays and was designed to save time and increase frequency.

After the World Trade Center attacks, the was closed for a full year and four days. The stations Cortlandt, Rector, and South Ferry were off limits during that time period. Additionally, the had to be routed to Brooklyn until the tunnel to South Ferry was entirely rebuilt. It was re-constructed the same exact way using old blueprints from 1904. Once things were more settled on Ground Zero, the and were restored to normal services on 9/15/2002. Later, the was phased out on 5/31/2005 in favor of a full time service. The number was also used on the Dyre Ave line 1956 - 1966.
