The Washington Heights - Eighth Ave express train opened on September 10, 1932 from 200th street to Hudson terminal (WTC). It was extended to 207th street as well as Jay street on 7/1/1933, continued to Bergen street 3/20/1933, all the way to Church Ave 7/1/1933. Years later, it was extended to Rockaway Ave on 4/9/1936, Broadway Junction on 12/30/1946, and Euclid Ave 11/28/1948. The train was considered a marvel of its time.

As a result of these expansions, the Ninth Ave el was abandoned in Manhattan on 6/1/1940, accept a very small section in the Bronx that lasted until 1958. The new subway also made the Fulton street el obsolete from Fulton Ferry and Park Row to Rockaway Ave on 6/1/1940 in Brooklyn. Later, the second half of the Fulton street el would be demolished from Rockaway Ave to Crescent street by 4/26/1956. A very small part of the Fulton street el was kept as a result of World War 2 making it too expensive to tear down. From this, the new subway connected with the el at Grant Ave and terminated at Lefferts Blvd 4/29/1956.

Additionally, an abandoned part of the LIRR to the Rockaways connected with the Fulton el on 6/28/1956. The extended to Rockaway Park 9/16/1956 and the replaced it 1/27/1957 in that area. Later the extended to Far Rockaway 7/9/1967 and replacing the there 9/10/1972.

The movie "Ghost" was filmed in an abandoned lower level of the 42nd street station under the Port Authority bus terminal in 1989. This was the scene where Patrick Swayzie was first learning how to fling soda caps and realizing his spiritual powers. Additionally, the Hoyt Schermerhorn station is best known for the late Michael Jackson's video "Bad" back in 1987.
