The Washington Heights - Sixth Ave subway (BB train) opened on 12/15/1940 from 168th street to 34th street. It kept this general route up until 11/26/1967 when the Chrystie street connection allowed IND trains to cross the Manhattan bridge into Brooklyn. From this, the BB train was renamed and extended into the Fourth Ave subway and West End el. The route became 168th street to Stillwell Ave.

On 10/29/1989, the had a secondary service to 21st street - Queensbridge using the new 63rd street tunnel. In March of 1997, the switched northern routes with the and now goes to Bedford Park. In 2001, the went back to its original 168th street to 34th street route while the Manhattan bridge was being rehabilitated. Finally on 2/22/2004, all four tracks on the bridge were functioning once again. From this, the train went beyond 34th street over the Manhattan bridge to Brooklyn. The train also switched southern routes with the train. Since then, the train goes from 168th street to Stillwell Ave via the Brighton line.
