The Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach Railroad (Canarsie line) was a surface steam railroad beginning October 21, 1865 from Atlantic Ave to Canarsie Pier. It ran down Van Sinderen Ave to Linden Blvd, then through a private right of way to Rockaway Ave between E 93 st and E 94 st to Canarsie Landing (near Skidmore Ave and Canarsie Road). It connected with Broadway Junction (Eastern Parkway) linking with the Broadway el (Jamaica el) to a now vanished Williamsburg terminus (Broadway Ferry) 9/4/1885 - 1917.
In May of 1906, the Brooklyn Rapid transit purchased the Canarsie Railroad and leased it to the Union Elevated railroad company. As of July 28, 1906, the line was elevated and electrified with third rails from New Lots Ave to Atlantic Ave, and part of the line relocated adjacent to the LIRR Bay Ridge Branch. The surface part of the route was electrified with trolly wire. Additionally, the Canarsie line was extended over the Williamsburg bridge on September 16, 1908 to Essex terminal. This allowed the Broadway el and Broadway Brooklyn shortlines into Manhattan for the first time. Later, it was extended to Chambers by 8/14/1913. Also in 1913, a section of the Canarsie line was eliminated from Rockaway Pkway to Canarsie shore. This section of track became a trolly service until the 1940s.
The Atlantic Ave station was rebuilt in 1916 to serve the Fulton el, Canarsie, and Broadway els. (The eastern-most platform of this station is a remnant of the Fulton street el NOW served by the train since 2003.) The BRT was reorganized in 1923 as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) and the 14st segment of the line opened in 1924 from Montrose to Bushwick Aves. It extended east beneath Wycoff Ave and then south to a new elevated Broadway Junction station in 1928. This new station was built above an existing elevated station at Broadway Junction. It was extended south connecting to the six track Atlantic Ave station. From then on, the Canarsie line continued its current route to Rockaway Parkway and was known as the BMT #16 train (1924 - 1967), the LL (1967 - 1985), and now called the (1985 - present). There was also an unofficial BMT #17 train connecting the 14st Canarsie line with the Fulton st el via Atlantic Ave (1936 - 1956). In 1931, the 8th Ave / 14th street station was opened to complete the current Canarsie line.

Since the 14th street section of the Canarsie line was connected to Broadway Junction in 1928, this became the MAIN Canarsie service. The original track connection between the older part of the Canarsie line and Broadway el (BMT # 14) was severed on 11/27/1967. The Atlantic Ave station on the Canarsie line train was reconfigured from 2001 - 2003. Originally, parts of the Bay Ridge branch of the LIRR were supposed to have been the new connection for the train in 1968 but that idea was shelved. Instead, the Atlantic Ave station on the was torn down because of its complexity of abandoned trackways leading to nowhere. After track re-configurations, remnants of the Fulton st el (BMT #13 train) were used as the new Atlantic Ave station as of 2003.
