SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Fourth Ave subway was built by the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) in 1915. Around the corner was the Fifth Ave el and its extension, the Third Ave el 1888 - 1940. This particular el was the main artery to not only the Culver, West End, and Sea Beach lines in 1890, but additionally the Brighton Beach line 8/15/1896, the Myrtle Ave el in 1898, Fulton st el in 1898, and Lexington Ave el 3/13/1898 crossing the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan. Unfortunately, the Fifth Ave el was losing business to the newer Fourth Ave subway around the corner since 1915! In 1923, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT).

While the Fifth Ave el co-existed, the Fourth Ave subway gradually brought the West End , , Sea Beach , and Brighton line , , across the newer Manhattan bridge and Montegue street tunnel through Broadway, all the way to 59th street and Lexington Ave. It was also able to bring the Culver through the Nassau street loop along with the eastern division's Jamaica el , and Myrtle Ave line . The Fifth Ave el only went up to the tip of Manhattan at Park Row! Plus the Fifth Ave el was redundant in Brooklyn with the newer Fourth Ave subway, so they ended the Fifth Ave el on 6/1/1940 and the Third Ave el portion of the structure became part of the Gowanus Expressway in the 1940s.

The Fourth Ave subway was known as the BMT #2 train (1928 - 1960), the RR (1960 -1986), now called the train (1986 - present). The lines using the Fourth Ave subway throughout the years were the BMT Brighton #1a, #1b, #, Fourth Ave #2, West End #3a, #3b, Sea Beach #4, Culver #5a, Culver #5, RR, , , , , QB, , QJ, , , , , , , and trains.

A service between Times Square and Brighton Beach was begun on 8/1/1920 known as the BMT #1 train. It was renamed the train in 1927. On December 1, 1955, a small connection was made between the 60th street tunnel and Queens Blvd line. This allowed for an extended BMT train bridging the Brighton line with the Queens Blvd subway. The concept of this connection was to allow (BMT) trains to merge with the (IND) tracks & vice versa. The lasted until 1964, but was used as an train 11/27/1967 to 8/27/1976, an extended train 11/27/1967 till 12/11/1988, and later an extended train 12/11/1988 to present.
