The GG train, known as the Brooklyn - Queens crosstown, was always the oddity of the entire subway system. It's the only line that never goes to Manhattan and has always had cuts in services. It first opened from Queens Plaza to Nassau Ave on 8/19/1933. It was extended from Queens Plaza to 71 - Continental Ave on 4/24/1937 and extended from Nassau Ave to Smith - 9th street on 7/1/1937. In 1939, this was the line that brought people to the Worlds Fair using a specially built surface railroad called the S Special. It was dismantled in the 1940s and became the right of way for part of the Van Wyck Expressway since then.

During the 1960s - 1970s, the GG was extended to Church Ave so the could run express. It didn't go well with passengers since it deprived them of direct Manhattan service so it was brought back to its Smith - 9th to 71 - Continental Ave route. On May 5, 1985, the GG was renamed during a double letter elimination program throughout the entire system.

On December 17, 2001, the was cutback from the Queens Blvd subway to make way for the new train. The route is now Smith - 9th to Long Island City - Court Square. However, at the outrage of many angry passengers, the continued along the Queens Blvd line but only after 8 PM, nights, and weekends. Its been seen along the Culver el to Stillwell Ave during track work along the train route past Church Ave.

The ALMOST saw service cuts in 2009 because of the MTA budget. On 7/5/2009, the line was extended to Church Ave after many years, but as of 6/25/2010, the route was shortened. It currently goes from Church Ave to Long Island City - Court Square route on a FULL TIME basis. The after 8 PM, nights, and weekends schedule was lost because of these cuts. The train didn't help matters either going into territory because riders aren't getting the full benefit of the line! The Hoyt Schermerhorn station is best known for the late Michael Jackson's video "Bad" back in 1987.
