SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Brooklyn Elevated Railway (Jamaica el) was a steam powered el beginning on 9/4/1885. It was one of the original elevated lines in Brooklyn completed in 1893 from Cypress Hills terminal to Broadway Ferry in Williamsburg. It was electrified by the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) on 7/1/1900 and known as the Broadway el (Brooklyn). It was kind of the main artery to many of the other els in its day like the Park Ave el (1885 - 1890), Lexington Ave el (1885 - 1950), Myrtle / Chambers subway (1908 - present), and eastern part of the Canarsie line (1885 - 1967). Additionally, the Long Island Railroad had a short stint using the Jamaica el to connect with the Rockaways for a few years, 8/4/1913 - 1916 (today's line).

The OLDEST sixteen stations still in operation on the Broadway el, (today's , and ) are Marcey Ave, Hewes st, Lorimer st, Flushing Ave, Myrtle Ave, Kosciusko street, Gates Ave, Halsey street, Chauncey street, Broadway Junction, Alabama Ave, Van Sicklen Ave, Cleveland Ave, Norwood Ave, Crescent street, and Cypress Hills. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 119 TO 127 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012)

On 7/3/1918, there was an extension of the el from Cypress Hills to 168th street. This extension would make the Broadway el be known as the Jamaica el. Later, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) in 1923. Parts of the Jamaica el were demolished from 111st to 168st in 1974 in favor of the new Archer Ave subway. The services throughout the years were the Broadway #14, Jamaica #15, Myrtle/Chambers #10, , QJ, K, , , , , and trains. The Jamaica el was used for the movie "Ghost" near Myrtle Ave where Willie Lopez was hit by a car and taken by the bad spirits.
