The express was a subway service to JFK airport from 57th street / Sixth Ave to W 4 St, then along the Eighth Ave subway non-stop to Howard Beach in 1978. "Take the train to the plane" used to be the famous slogan during that time period. A fare of $6.50 was collected onboard the train itself. At certain times, regular passengers were allowed on too.

When the 63rd street tunnel was completed, the line was extended to Queensbridge on 10/29/1989. Although the phased out on April 15, 1990, a monorail tram was built from Jamaica train station on the LIRR straight to JFK airport in 2003.
