The Lexington Ave el was a steam powered el beginning 5/13/1885. It was Brooklyn's first el that operated from Fulton Ferry, crossed York street a few blocks east, turned south on Hudson street, then east along Park Ave until it connected with the Lexington Ave el at Myrtle Ave. After that, it traveled along Lexington el to Gates Ave where it connects with today's Broadway el terminating at Cypress Hills (today's and trains.

The section of el from Fulton Ferry to Bridge / York streets, known as the Park Ave el, was abandoned 4/11/1904 and the section from Navy / Park Ave to Washington / Park Ave was abandoned 12/8/1889. When these sections were gone, the Lexington Ave el was re-routed and began at Park Row, Manhattan and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to Sands street on the Fifth Ave el. It continued along the Fifth Ave el to Adams st and Bridge st and switched to the Myrtle Ave el to Navy st, Vanderbilt Ave, Washington Ave, and Grand Ave. After Grand, it continued on its own el along Lexington Ave for seven stations; they were Dekalb Ave, Greene Ave, Franklyn Ave, Nostrand Ave, Tompkins Ave, Sumner Ave, and Reid Ave. After Reid, it joined today's Broadway el four stops; Gates Ave, Halsey st, Chauncey st, Broadway Junction, and Alabama Ave. On 5/30/1893, it continued along Fulton street five more stops; Van Sicklin Ave, Cleveland Ave, Norwood Ave, Crescent st, and Cypress Hills.

The Lexington Ave el was taken over by the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) and electrified on 7/1/1900. In 1923, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit (BMT). The Lexington el service lasted until 10/13/1950. The Park Ave el was demolished 12/8/1889 because it was so close to the Myrtle Ave and Lexington Ave els. This section has been part of the BQE since the 1940s. The OLDEST stations still in operation from the Park Ave el are Gates Ave, Halsey street, Chauncey street, Broadway Junction, Alabama Ave, Van Sicklen Ave, Cleveland Ave, Norwood Ave, Crescent street, and Cypress Hills (today's and on the Broadway el). IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 119 to 127 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012)

Once the IND took over on June 1, 1940, many els were being demolished. For whatever reasons, the Lexington Ave el hung on another 10 years after unification. When the IND built the competing train so nearby, customers were being drawn away from the Lexington el and chose the more modern subway instead. In the later part of it's years, the Lexington Ave el was known as the BMT #12 train 1924 until its demise 10/13/1950.
