THE MYRTLE-CHAMBERS SUBWAY (M TRAIN)

SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Myrtle / Chambers subway came into being once the Broadway el was connected to the Williamsburg bridge on 9/16/1908 to go to the Nassau street loop in Manhattan. The Myrtle Ave el connected to the Broadway el at Myrtle Ave on 7/29/1914 to make this subway service possible. The Myrtle Ave line first began in Queens as a steam powered surface railroad beginning April 10, 1888. It went from Metropolitan Ave to Seneca Aves, then connected to the current Myrtle Ave el once it crossed the border into Brooklyn. From there, it went from Myrtle / Wyckoff Ave along the el to Adams street on the Fifth Ave el. In 1898, it was extended to Sands street and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to Park Row, Manhattan. On July 1, 1900, the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) took over the Myrtle Ave el and electrified line, along with the surface route. In 1913, the surface route became a trolley service until the 1940s and an extension of the Myrtle Ave el was built in Queens from Senaca Ave to Metropolitan Aves. The BRT was reorganized as the (BMT) in 1923.

When the IND unified the entire subway system on 6/1/1940, many els were being demolished. Unfortunately, a huge chunk of the Myrtle Ave el was doomed for demolition and abandoned on 10/4/1969. This was probably because the train was built so nearby. It was a major blow to the neighborhood because it went from being a white middle classed area to one that is economically depressed; no trains to get people to downtown Brooklyn anymore! During the good times, the Myrtle Ave el was known as the BMT #11 train (1924 - 1967) and the Myrtle/Chambers subway was named the BMT #10 train (5/30/1931 - 11/26/1967). Later, the #11 train was renamed before demolition (11/26/1967 - 10/4/1969) while the #10 train is today's (11/26/1967 - present).

The was always the orphan of the BMT system. It not only lost its sibling the line, but was thrown all around the system. On 1/2/1973, it was extended to the Brighten line going from Metropolitan Ave to Stillwell Ave. Then on 4/26/1986, it was moved to the Fourth Ave subway ending at 95th street, Bay Ridge. Soon after, it was moved once again to the West End el in 1987 terminating at Bay Parkway until June 25th, 2010. The was ALMOST the victim of MTA service cuts in 2009. It almost wouldn't go all the way to Bay Parkway anymore along the West End el. The would've resumed the older 1931 - 1967 route from Metropolitan Ave to Chambers.

As of late 2009, there was talk of re-using an old set of tracks from 1968 called the Chrystie Street connection to connect the with the line. This unused connection between the BMT Nassau Street Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line would change the terminus from being Second Avenue. Instead, the would leave Broadway - Lafayette Street and serve the current line stations from Essex Street in Manhattan to Metropolitan Avenue in Queens. (In a way, this will be similar to what the train was from 1968 - 1976; a combination of the Sixth Ave subway with the Jamaica el, only now there would be the added bonus of going further along the Myrtle Ave el and tie in with the Queens Blvd subway from the Sixth Ave side!) As of 3/19/2010, it was decided from the public they wanted this merged line to 'still' be called the M train since the letter has been used since 1960. The only difference will be that it'll be an orange to show that it's part of the Sixth Ave line! (Another BMT line being merged with the IND like what happened in years past!) It'll be renamed the Myrtle / Queens Blvd subway. The last day for the will be 6/25/2010 and the will merge with the route.

The OLDEST existing stations of the Myrtle Ave el are Myrtle - Wykoff Aves, Knickerbocker Ave, Central Ave, Myrtle Ave, Flushing Ave, Lorimer street, Hewes street, and Marcey Ave (today's and trains). IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 124 to 125 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012) The Myrtle Ave el was used for the movie "Ghost" near Myrtle Ave where Willie Lopez was hit by a car and taken by the bad spirits.
