The Myrtle Ave line first began in Queens as a steam powered surface railroad beginning April 10, 1888. It went from Metropolitan Ave to Seneca Aves, then connected to the current Myrtle Ave el once it crossed the border into Brooklyn. From there, it went from Myrtle / Wyckoff Ave along the el to Adams street on the Fifth Ave el. In 1898, it was extended to Sands street and crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to Park Row, Manhattan. (The Sands to Park Row part of the tracks were part of the The New York and Brooklyn Bridge Railway 1883 - 1889). On July 1, 1900, the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) took over the Myrtle Ave el and electrified line, along with the surface route. In 1913, the surface route became a trolley service until the 1940s and an extension of the Myrtle Ave el was built in Queens from Senaca Ave to Metropolitan Aves. The BRT was reorganized as the (BMT) in 1923.

When the IND unified the entire subway system on 6/1/1940, many els were being demolished. Unfortunately, a huge chunk of the Myrtle Ave el was doomed for demolition and abandoned on 10/4/1969. This was probably because the train was built so nearby. It was a major blow to the neighborhood because it went from being a white middle classed area to one that is economically depressed; no trains to get people to downtown Brooklyn anymore! The OLDEST existing stations of the Myrtle Ave el are Myrtle - Wykoff Aves, Knickerbocker Ave, Central Ave, Myrtle Ave, Flushing Ave, Lorimer street, Hewes street, and Marcey Ave, (today's and trains). IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 124 to 125 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012)

During the good times, the Myrtle Ave el was known as the BMT #11 train (1924 - 1967) and the Myrtle/Chambers subway was named the BMT #10 train (5/30/1931 - 11/26/1967). Later, the BMT #11 train was renamed before demolition (11/26/1967 - 10/4/1969) while the BMT #10 train is today's (11/26/1967 - present). The Myrtle Ave el was used for the movie "Ghost" near Myrtle Ave where Willie Lopez was hit by a car and taken by the bad spirits.
