The Ninth Ave el began as a steam elevated line, known as The Harvey Railroad beginning 7/3/1868. It was officially the first el in Manhattan. Later, it became known as The West Side and Yonkers Railway in 1870, later called The New York Elevated Railway October 1871. In 1879, it was reorganized as the Manhattan Railway. It was leased to the (IRT) on April 1, 1903 and electrified with third rails. The Sixth Ave el turned west on 53rd street and connected with the Ninth Ave el at 53rd / Ninth. Later, the double decker el continued north and connected with the Jerome Ave el train 7/1/1918. This connection was known as the Sedgewick connection at 8th Ave and 155st. Remains of this abandoned el still exists today in the Bronx.

When the 1940s were approaching, the Ninth Ave el, along with the Second, Third, and Sixth Ave els were doomed once the more modern subways were being built throughout the city. The main reason for the Ninth Ave el's demise was because the Independent (IND) built a subway under Eighth Ave, today's , , and trains. Once the IND built the Eighth Ave subway, it was felt that the Ninth Ave el was redundant so it was abandoned June 1, 1940. The Sedgewick connection continued to exist as the Polo Grounds shuttle from 155st to 167st until 1958.

In Brooklyn, there was once a Fulton st el serving the (BMT #13 and #17) trains. Directly under it, the IND built today's and lines which is part of the Eighth Ave subway from Manhattan. Therefore, because of the Eighth Ave subway, we lost the Ninth Ave el and the Fulton st els. The only part of the Fulton st el still in existence are the stations from Grant Ave to Lefferts on the line. Atlantic Ave was also a remnant of the Fulton st el but is now connected with the train. The Franklyn Ave shuttle had some remnant of the Fulton st el as well but they tore it down in 1998 when they rebuilt the entire shuttle. Duke Ellington's song, 'Take the A train' was a tribute to this Eighth Ave subway and Brooklyn subway but we still lost two els as a result.
