SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Park Ave el opened as a steam railroad 5/13/1885. It was Brooklyn's first el that operated from Fulton Ferry, crossed York street a few blocks east, turned south on Hudson street, then east along Park Ave until it connected with the Lexington Ave el at Myrtle Ave. After that, it traveled along Lexington el to Gates Ave where it connects with today's Broadway el terminating at Cypress Hills (today's and trains). The Park Ave el was demolished 12/8/1889 because it was so close to the Myrtle Ave and Lexington Ave els. This section has been part of the BQE since the 1940s.

The Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) took over the line on 7/1/1900 and electrified it. Later, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) in 1923. The OLDEST five stations still in operation from the Park Ave el are Gates Ave, Halsey street, Chauncey street, Broadway Junction, and Alabama Ave, (today's and on the Broadway el). IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 124 YEARS OLD! (as of 2009)
