SUBWAY TRIVIA: THE LIRR IN RELATION TO BROOKLYN ELS:
SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The train was a combination of the Fourth Ave subway and Broadway / Jamaica el from 11/27/1967 to 6/28/1968. It went from 95th street Bay Ridge to 168st in Queens. Although the concept of combining the Fourth Ave subway with the Jamaica el was good, the service barely lasted a year. Later, parts of the Jamaica el were torn down from 121th street to 168th street since the 1980s to make way for the Archer Ave extension.

The service was phased out in 1968 but was changed to an RR special going from 95th street to Chambers. This began on 6/28/1968 until 5/5/1985. This was separate from the main RR train service going from 95th street Bay Ridge to Ditmars Blvd Astoria, Queens. On May 5, 1985, the RR special was phased out and the main RR train was renamed . There was a double letter elimination program going on during that period and this was one of the lines to switch to single letters.

The only time we ever had an service again was from 9/11/2001 to 10/28/2001. This was the result of 9/11 when the assumed control of the Fourth Ave subway. The and were suspended due to Canal, City Hall, Cortlandt, Rector, and Whitehall stations being off limits. Thus, this emergency service was a combination and service.

The OLDEST sixteen stations still in operation on the Broadway el, (today's , and ) are Marcey Ave, Hewes st, Lorimer st, Flushing Ave, Myrtle Ave, Kosciusko street, Gates Ave, Halsey street, Chauncey street, Broadway Junction, Alabama Ave, Van Sicklen Ave, Cleveland Ave, Norwood Ave, Crescent street, and Cypress Hills. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 119 TO 127 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012)
