The New York and Sea Beach Railroad (NY&SB) first operated as a surface steam railroad on July 18, 1877 from the 64th street pier to Bath Junction (62nd street and New Utrecht Ave), Brooklyn. On July 17, 1879, the railroad was extended south through the farmlands of Dyker Heights, Borough Park, Bensonhurst, and Gravesend until it reached Sea Beach Palace Hotel and Depot on W 10 St and Surf Ave in Coney Island. It was re-organized as the New York and Seabeach Railway in 1883 and renamed the Seabeach Railway in 1896. While remaining on the surface, it was electrified with trolley wire 1897 - 1913.

The Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT) took over the line in 1900. In 1903, the BRT began a through service coupling and uncoupling Sea Beach cars to trains of the West End line at Bath Junction. From there, the Sea Beach and West End both continued to 9th Ave, then 8th Ave of the surface route of the Prospect Park and Coney Island Railroad (Culver line) to the Fifth Ave el's 36th street station, Union Depot. Once it reached there, it had access to the rest of the Fifth Ave el across the Brooklyn bridge to the Manhattan terminal, Park Row. Many services were available as a result of this like joint trolly and el services, but because of numerous accidents, the section of track from 64th street pier to Bath Junction became strictly for trollies in 1907 until the 1940s. Additionally, a ramp was built giving the trollies access to 3rd Ave. The rest of the Sea Beach line from Park Row to Coney Island used el cars since then.

In 1910, Sea Beach trains started terminating at West End Depot in Coney Island instead of Sea Beach Depot. It was also the end of the Sea Beach - Fifth Ave el route in 1913 when the current open cut was built to replace the 1877 Sea Beach Railroad. The tracks were built underground but you can look down at them from many of the Brooklyn Avenues. (It should be noted that the "older" Park Row to Coney Island route came back very briefly along the middle tracks of the current Sea Beach line when it was first built!) The original surface railroad was mostly scrapped so they could build the current right of way but a small part can still be seen near Ft Hamilton Parkway before the Sea Beach joins the Fourth Ave subway. The BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) in 1923.

The Sea Beach line didn't use letters or numbers to designate their trains in the beginning so it was simply known as the 'The Sea Beach line' (1913 - 1924). The express service was known as the Sunny Summer Sunday Special (1924 - 1952). Later, they started using numbers to label the lines and it was named the BMT #4 train (1924 - 1951). Later, the #4 was renamed and served the Sea Beach line (1951 - present). The was briefly the express service (1967 - 1968). Today, it's exclusively the train. (1951 - present)
