SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Second Ave el began as a steam elevated railroad on Allen and Division streets. Construction on it was continued by the Metropolitan Railway September 1, 1879. This was after they took control of the Sixth Ave el. It became the Manhattan Railway March 1, 1880 and opened to the public that same day. Later, it was leased to the (IRT) and electrified April 1, 1903. The Second Ave el was extended over the Queensboro bridge to serve the Astoria el as the #3 train, today's and and Flushing el as the #4 train, today's in Queens, July 23, 1917. The el was also extended to the Bronx connecting with the Westchester Ave el and train in 1917. This elevated connection was most probably a #2 service coming from the Second Ave el.

By the time the IND took over BMT and IRT properties, the Second Ave el was doomed to survive any further, especially since the IND started planning a Second Ave subway but never completed it due to lack of funds. Even without the anticipated subway, the Second Ave el was demolished. There was also the Third Ave el directly around the corner. Though it survived the longest of all the Manhattan els, it was demolished with claims it wasn't strong enough to hold the steel subway cars. But yet they tore down the stronger Second Ave el first and left the weaker Third Ave el standing longer so they could justify the weakness as a reason for tearing it down. Because of this, the Lexington Ave subway , , and trains are way above capacity. Overcrowding is everywhere. Atleast if the Third Ave el was still here, conditions would be so much better. The last day of service on the Second Ave el was June 13, 1942.

THE ASTORIA EL CONNECTION

In Queens, the Astoria el served many trains in its day, from two different companies, the IRT and BMT. The el served the Second Ave el #3 train from 1917 - 1942 and the BMT Astoria # 8 train from Queensboro Plaza to Ditmars 1920 - 1949. When the Second Ave el was demolished and train service was severed from the Queensboro Bridge in 1942, the Astoria el was served by the BMT Astoria #8 train for seven more years. Once the 60th street tunnel was finally finished in 1949, today's Broadway subway and was connected to the Astoria el. The platforms were shaved back to accomodate the wider BMT trains and the BMT #8 was phased out to became an extended Brighten 1 and Fourth Ave subway 2 trains, later the Brighten 1, QT, RR, and T, later the QB, QT, RR, and T, later the RR, later the , later the . Today it's the and trains.

THE FLUSHING EL CONNECTION

In Queens, the Flushing el was also a place served by both the IRT and BMT companies. The el served today's IRT train from Grand Central to Vernon Jackson 1915 - present, the Second Ave el #4 train from South Ferry to Willets Point 1917 - 1942, and the BMT Flushing #9 train from Main St to Queensboro Plaza 1923 - 1951. When the Second Ave el was severed from the Queensboro Bridge in 1942, today's IRT train was becoming the main line. The BMT Flushing #9 train was phased out nine years later after the change because it was redundant. Today, the train will be extended to 11th Ave terminating at the Jacob Javetts Convention Center by 2014.
