The Sixth Ave el first began as a steam elevated railroad 6/13/1872. It was known as the Gilbert Elevated until the company lost control in 1873. It was renamed The Metropolitan Elevated Railway in 1875 and reorganized as The Manhattan Railway September 1, 1879. It was leased to the (IRT) and electrified with third rails April 1, 1903. The Sixth Ave el turned west on 53rd street and connected with the Ninth Ave el at 53rd and Ninth Ave. Later, the double decker el continued north until it connected with the Jerome Ave el train in the Bronx at 8th Ave and 155st. This was known as the Sedgewick connection which began on July 1, 1918. Portions of this abandoned el still exists today in the Bronx.

The Sixth Ave el was looked down upon by the 1930s, along with the Ninth, Second, and Third Ave els because of the newer, more modern subways being built throughout the city. Once the (IND) took over the BMT and IRT properties, the Sixth Ave el was abandoned December 4, 1938 to make way for the Sixth Ave subway, today's , , , and trains. The project began in 1938, but didn't reach 57th street until the late 1960s. The newer subway really transformed Sixth Ave into a more corporate part of town with luxury office towers rather than the original tenements, though some still exist if you really look.
