SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Broadway - West End line first began service when the West End el first opened by the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) on 6/24/1916. This particular service was the express and went from Stillwell Ave to Times Square. In 1923, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) and this line was known as the BMT #3a train im 1924. In 1951, it was renamed the train and extended to 57th street on 5/2/1957. In 1961, it was extended into Queens via the 60th street tunnel joining the Astoria el to Ditmars Blvd. Once the IND lines started merging with the BMT, the was phased out. From this, the train took over the West End el 11/26/1967 - 2001. When the Manhattan bridge was practically falling apart, the BMT took over from 2001 - 2/22/2004. Today, the is the main service (2/22/2004 - present) and the was the rush hour service up to Bay Parkway along the West End el (1987 - June 2010).
