The Second Ave subway has been an urban legend for quite some time. People old enough to remember it are well into their 90s by now. But alas, as of 4/12/2007, there was a ground-breaking ceremony. Word is out that a partial Second Ave subway is on its way. It'll go from 96th street / Second Ave to 63rd street / Second Ave. This project was planned since the 1930s but construction didn't really happen until the 1970s and FINALLY again in the Spring of 2006! It should be finished by 2014 and be called
the The
train.
may be the extension of Broadway service beyond 57th street into this new line or even the rebirth of the
since it ended on 6/25/2010. After 2014, a full length subway will continue from 63rd to Lower East side / Second Ave linking itself with the
train to Brooklyn. Currently, signals on the unused tracks of the
from Church Ave to Lower East Side - Second Ave are being updated for an extended
service from the future Second Ave subway after 2014. North of 96th street could be a continuation of the line to 125th street / Second Ave with a connection to the Bronx via the Pelham Bay elevated
train.
