SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Broadway - West End short line first began service when the West End el first opened by the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) on 6/24/1916. This particular service was the local and went from Bay Parkway to Chambers. The BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan transit (BMT) in 1923. On May 30, 1931, the West End short line was known as the BMT #3b train. In 1949, it was renamed the , this time going from Stillwell Ave to Times Square. In 1959, it was re-routed once again to the Nassau street loop going from Stillwell to Chambers. This service ended on 6/30/1968 once the IND lines started merging with the BMT. From this, the train took over the West End el from 11/26/1967 - 2001. When the Manhattan bridge was practically falling apart, the BMT took over from 2001 - 2/22/2004 using the Montegue street tunnel. Today, the IND is the main service (2/22/2004 - present) and the BMT was the rush hour service (1987 - June 2010), like the BMT #3b train was for the West End el years previously.
