The train first came into being on 12/17/2001. It was created as a bonus to the Sixth Ave subway and Queens Blvd line from 71st Ave / Continental to Lower East Side / Second Ave. Currently, the line is nothing more than an abbreviated train but in due time will become a line of great importance. On 12/16/2001, a day before, the new 63rd street tunnel was opened for the train. The older 53rd street tunnel was already used by the and for the first time, by the new service.

An old set of tracks from 1968 called the Chrystie Street connection may be used again for the . This unused connection between the BMT Nassau Street Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line would make the no longer serve its current terminus, Second Avenue. Instead, the would leave Broadway - Lafayette Street and serve the current line stations from Essex Street in Manhattan to Metropolitan Avenue in Queens. (In a way, this would be similar to what the train was from 1968 - 1976; a combination of the Sixth Ave subway with the Jamaica el, only now there would be the added bonus of going further along the Myrtle Ave el and tie in with the Queens Blvd subway from the Sixth Ave side!) As of 3/19/20010, it was decided from the public they wanted this merged line to 'still' be called the M train since the letter has been used since 1960. The only difference will be that it'll be an orange to show that it's part of the Sixth Ave line! (Another BMT line being merged with the IND like what happened in years past!) The last day for the train was 6/25/2010.
