SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The Brooklyn, Bath, and Coney Island Railroad (BB&CI) began as a horse pulled surface railroad in 1860 from 25th street and 5th Ave to 65th street and New Utrecht Ave. In 1864, the railroad switched over to steam and by 1867 was the first steam railroad to reach the Atlantic ocean in Coney Island. It was reorganized as the Brooklyn, Bath, and West End Railroad (BB&WE) in 1885. That same year, a branch was built from 5th Ave and 38th street to 2nd Ave and 39th as a ferry connection. When the Fifth Ave el reached 36th street and 5th Ave (Union Depot), surface railroad north of 36th street was abandoned. Trains ran from 2 branches - one from the 39th street ferries and the other from the Fifth Ave el to Trivoli's Hotel near West End Depot in Coney Island.

On 5/29/1890, the (BB&WE) extended north to the 8th Ave station of the Prospect Park and Coney Island Railroad surface route. From there, it had access to a very important station at 36th street on the Fifth Ave el called Union Depot. The Sea Beach Railway connected there in 1903 and the Third Ave el from Bay Ridge connected in 1893. For the first time, these lines had access to the Fifth Ave el via the Brooklyn bridge to Manhattan's elevated terminal, Park Row. Additionally, a New York Ferry connection was a supplement in 1890 for the The Brooklyn, Bath, and West End Railroad and Prospect Park & Coney Island Railroad (Culver). Those lines went from the 8th Ave station they THEN shared (since the Union Depot connection) to the 39th street pier in Sunset Park.

The surface railroad was electrified using trolly wires on 11/10/1893. Later, the Brooklyn Rapid transit (BRT) took over the line in 1898 and built the current el in 1916 to replace the 1860 West End Railroad. The current el was built on parts of New Utrecht Ave, 86th street, and Stillwell Ave. The original railroad was closer to the water along Harway Ave and eventually became a trolly service in 1913 until it was phased out in 1947. In 1923, the BRT was reorganized as the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit (BMT).

The West End el didn't use numbers or letters to designate their trains so it was simply called, 'The West End el' (1916 - 1928). Later, it was known as the BMT #3a train from 42nd street Times Square to Stillwell Ave (1928 - 5/30/49) and #3b train from Chambers to Stillwell Ave (5/30/31 - 5/30/49). Later the from 57th street to Stillwell Ave (1951 - 1967) and from 42nd street Times Square to Stillwell Ave (1949 - 6/30/1968) were on the el. Later, the served the el (11/26/67 - 2001) and later the (2001 - 2/22/04). Today, the el is served by the train (2/22/04 - present) and the during rush hours (1987 - present). The West End el has been seen in TV shows and movies like John Travolta walking under the el in "Saturday Night Fever" (1977) , the opening credits to "Welcome Back Kotter" (1976) , Gene Hackman in "The French Connection" (1971) , "The American Gangster" (2007) and more!
